Remembering the Railway Line from Cowbridge Station to Hertford East Station

Anthony Powell

It was way back in the 1950s and 1960s when this particular line was in operation. As I recall coal was hauled between the two stations or, I should say, between the two goods yards at either end of these two stations. I was at the time, in 1962, a 12-year-old schoolboy at the old Cowper School in London Road, Hertford. Going back to the railway, it closed in 1965 under the Beeching axe.

Cowper School is no longer there today, I’m afraid to say – demolished to make way for Gwynns Walk some years ago now. Cowbridge station was where Sainsbury’s stands today. As for Hertford East station goods yard it is, I believe, Norburys today or a redevelopment.
