Edith Jessie Norton, 49, from Wateringbury, near Maidstone, Kent was the ward matron. (The Wateringbury Stream runs into the Medway.) She was already a ward matron in 1901. She was the daughter of Selby and Ann Elizabeth Norton, nee Gould. Selby was 56 and a GP in 1891 when the family were living at the stables and coachhouse in Brixton Road, Lambeth. The census does not state any occupation for Edith Jessie.

In 1911 the family were living at Green Hill, Much Hadham, Herts., with five sons and three daughters. In all they had had thirteen children of whom twelve were still alive in 1911! David was a farm labourer as were David, 19, and Arthur, 15, the eldest children still at home.
