Mary Ann Bridge Canvin, 57, a widow from Dorchester in Dorset was the ward matron.  She married William Canvin in 1878.  In 1881 William was an organist and they were living in Hambledon, Bucks. with William H. their two years old son.

Grace Agnes Mabel Copland, 21, from Harefield, Middlesex, was the ward maid.  She was the daughter of Joseph and Eliza.  In 1891, when Grace was born, Joseph was a constable in the Metropolitan Police at Harefield.  By 1901, he was the licensed victualler at the Three Tuns, Nash Mills, Abbotts Langley and by 1911 he had moved to High Cross, just north of Ware where, aged 62, he was still an inn keeper. Eliza now 54 was his assistant.  They had been married for 33 years.  Unfortunately only five of the ten children Eliza had born were still alive.

Note 1: In 1911 Ann Elizabeth Farr was living with her uncle Felix Francis Farr, 76, who was described as a “gentleman retired”, in Cranbrook Road Chiswick with three other relatives.

Note 2: In April 1901 Marjorie Vern Harold was one month old and living with Henry, 51, her father who was an army pensioner, Ethel, her mother and two other girls in Portsmouth. In 1891 Henry had been a sergeant at Fort Regent, St. Hellier, Jersey. In 1911 Ethel was a widow living off private means with Hilda, 12, and Henry, 8, in Portsmouth.

Note 3: In 1901 Dorothy, Winifred and Catherine, their mother, were living with Catherine’s father, Michael Orme who was a fireman at a pipe works in Church Gresley, so perhaps James was in S. Africa?

Note 4: In 1911 Elizabeth Anne Inch was Head Teacher, Infant Dept., Chequer LCC School whilst Beatrice Nanie Louise, 16, her eldest daughter was a student at LCC North Collegiate School.

Note 5: In 1901 Joseph Jowett was an instructor & Colour Sergeant Major, Royal Gloucester Artilery Volunteers.

Note 6: In 1901 Lizzie MacNaught was a widow living in Brighton as a lodging house keeper with three daughters, incuding Jean, and two sons.

Note 7: In 1901 Ivy May Tabb was living with her grandparents, George and Eleanor Clarke, in Soho, London.  George was a surgeon.  It is possible that Eleanor Clarke was her mother.

Note 8: In 1901 Phyllis and Jane Topping were living with their grandparents, Walter and Julia Whitlock at Poole House, Toppesfield in Essex.  Walter was a farmer & forage merchant.

Note 9: In 1911 May Wheeler, was described as a widow and she was housekeeper to James Etherington and his two daughters in Caversham, Oxon.  She had her 10 years old son, Harry, living with her.  In 1901 she was living, along with Lilian and Harry, with her father George Peskett, a widower and retired house painter.
