Rev. Colin Weale, B.A., S.Th., M.Phil.

Rector of Bengeo and current ChairmanĀ of the Newton Exhibition Foundation.

It is a pleasure to welcome Len Green’s history of Hertford Green Coat School and the Newton Exhibition Foundation.

Mr Green traces the history of the Green Coat School from its origins early in the eighteenth century to its demise in 1894. His is no dry history, as he enlivens his narrative with detailed accounts from the school log books. They give a fascinating and sometimes amusing insight into life in the nineteenth century.

With the closure of the Green Coat School the Newton Exhibition Foundation began its valuable work in providing for poor scholarly boys. Mr Green faithfully traces the development of the charity to its present day scheme whereby both boys and girls, young men and women up to the age of 25 who have been educated in Hertford schools may benefit from the generosity and foresight of Gabriel Newton and Daniel Costeker.

Local historians and many others will be indebted to Len Green for this valuable record of educationĀ· in Hertford.
