Appendix 5: Thomas Smith, F.R.I.B.A. (1799 - 1875)

Len Green

Thomas Smith, born in Surrey, established his practice in Fore Street 1826 or 1827. He designed Hertford County Hospital (1833) and probably North Road House, from which he later practised. He was also responsible for the Cowper Testimonial School ( 1841). Smith became County Surveyor for Hertfordshire in 1837, and in 1854 for Bedfordshire as well. His son, also Thomas, joined him and continued with the practice when his father retired from it on becoming Mayor of Hertford in 1868. One cannot be sure whether father or son designed the Green Coat School in 1867. The Smiths also had a practice in Bloomsbury and designed several churches for English communities abroad. A younger son, Urban, followed his father as County Surveyor in 1875.
