WARE JULY 1721

A Gentleman who hath a Seat in Ware Park near Hertford, having ordered some Ground to be dug, an old servant of his endeavoured to divert the workmen from the Place directed but they pursuing their Orders, he hath not been seen since and after sinking to a considerable Depth, they found the Skeleton of a tall Man, which hath called to Mind amongst the Country People that about 18 years ago, a rich Lace-man of high Stature was suddenly missed and never heard of since. The same Servant lived there at that time, in the Place of Under Park Keeper.

They write from Ware in Hertfordshire that one Day last week, as the Malt-Factors of that Place were coming up from London, the Bargemen there rose up in Arms, to the Number of Eighty, and upwards, having their Faces Black’nd to disguise themselves from being known, and did much mischief, and that for several days they have appeared in a riotous manner. [August 1737]

They write from Ware in Hertfordshire that the Bargemen of that place have refused navigating the Barges to and from London, unless their wages are advanced, but the MaltĀ factors did not chuse to comply with their Demands in consequence, whereof on Wednesday last, they assembled to the number of about forty and proceeded to Bishop’s Stortford with Drums, fifes, French-horns &c. We don’t hear that they went any farther but it is thought that they will soon be glad to return to their former Occupations. [1767]
