My Time at McMullen's Brewery

By Anthony Powell

McMullen Brewery,

Hartham Lane,

Hertford

I worked for McMullen Brewery as an 18 and a half year old in 1969 in the wines and spirits department.  My supervisor was Mr Percy Metcalfe.  Also working in the department was our filling section where various wines and indeed spirits were syphoned from barrels into bottles and then labelled and corked for the warehouse and then sent out to customers.

Also we had a bottle washing department which  was run by Mr Derek Chambers.  The ladies who worked in the bottle filling department were Mrs Brown, Mrs Butterfield, and a good friend of my mum Phylis Thompson or Collins.  My manager at the time was Mr Maurice or Morris Beazley.  A lot of the people mentioned are no longer with us today, so I do hope that they would not have minded me writing and also mentioning them.

The bottling department at McMullen’s Brewery is no longer going today.

My late father, Mr William Powell, was also a drayman for McMullen’s in the late 1950s.
