Construction of the Buntingford branch line started in January 1859 and although there were difficulties from the start, the thirteen and three quarter miles branch from St. Margaret’s to Buntingford finally opened on 3rd July 1863 with intermediate stations at Mardock, Widford, Hadham, Standon, Braughing & West Mill.

Mardock Station served the village of Wareside but was closed on 16.11.1964 due to an increase in car ownership which affected passenger use of the railway line.

  • My father, Alan Dinmore was the Station Master at Mardock from 1950 to 1955. We lived in Station House adjacent to the goods yard. I attended Waresude School, and remember the teachers Mrs Pottle and Miss Chalkley. Mrs Kay was the head, and I had a very good education there.
