I read with interest the article in the Christmas edition of “The Waresider” … I would like to elaborate on the section referring to Mr Bill Brothers (my Uncle) who sold home-made ice-creams from his motorcycle and side car.
Bill would like nothing better than to talk about the old times, and just before he died he told me all about his sideline in ice-creams around 1934.
He was the first one in the village to sell ice-creams, which were made with milk from Appleton Farm (in Babb’s Green). Ice was purchased in large blocks from Mr. George Philpott, who ran the village stores. Cones were 1d, 2d and 3d; wafers were 2d and 3d. Also available were small halfpenny comets for the children.
Ice-cream selling was Bill’s weekend job. During the week, he sold hardware; black lead, boot polish, paraffin, soap, vinegar, etc. from his van – which he had converted from an old 6 cylinder 22 horse power car. His round included Wareside, Ware, Widford, Hunsdon and the Mundens.
