Fire in Ware

Maltings/factory blaze

Tim Shepherd

The family were coming back in the car from London towards Royston. When we reached the Hertford/Ware viaduct of the A10 we all looked to the right and saw a massive warehouse blaze, sillouhetted against the night sky. The flames were reaching severeal hundred feet in the air and a thick plume of smoke could be clearly seen in the night sky. There were some beautiful reds you could see the intence colours at theĀ bottom of it and the colours got darker andĀ darker like a fan. It was either a maltings or the Glaxo factory.

I can’t remember the year – does anyone know any more about what it was that was burning or have any photos of it?

  • I think the fire you mentioned was the maltings on the left just by the bridge over the river and i think it was in the 80,s my daughter went to see it. Remembering how old she was at the time. They built flats on the site.

  • It could have been the disused malting that went up in flames around 1963/4 time . I lived in Princess street at the time and some of the buildings were used as a television warehouse for ferguson and a poultry farm

  • Wondering if it could have been Dixon’s Mill and in the 50’s?
