POOR OLD DICK
The sad demise of a Council 'employee'
By Terry Askew
Today, being used to associating horses mainly with gymkhanas and County shows, where they appear pampered and well cared for, it seemed rather stark and a little disturbing to read the following sad report from the minute book of Ware Council.
Report dated 14th March 1917
Council Horse ‘Dick’
The Surveyor reported that this horse had fallen down and was reported by the Veterinary Surgeon to be unfit for further work and that, after consultation with the Chairman, the horse had been destroyed, 30/- (£1.50 in today’s money) being paid for the carcass.
The question of providing a new horse was referred to the ‘Horse Committee’.
