When Folly United played Sele Farm Telestar

Anthony Powell

When the Folly lads, namely Folly United, played Sele Farm Telestar on Hartham Common in the early part of the 1960s, around 1962 I had the chance to play for them although I was a Hornsmill lad at that time.

I can recall both teams changing outside the then open air swimming pool on Hartham Common and walking a short distance onto the pitch, one of the three pitches on the common back then.

Although a long time ago I believe I may have played the first half in goal and the second half on the pitch, either way Folly United ran out comfortably winners of this match. Hartham Pool is open twelve months a year as it was covered over some years ago.

Folly United later became Hertford Rangers Sports when they became older lads, as for Sele Farm Telestar some, or a few years on it may have been the case some of them may have joined the then formed Bury Rangers who played their home games at Bramfield’s Bury lane ground. So in doing so Bury Rangers I believe may have got their name.
