Christ's Hospital, House 2
1911
By Geoffrey Cordingley
Gertrude Elizabeth Jeffer, 38, ward matron, recorded as being born in Libenham, Norfolk.
Hilda Hammond, 28, ward maid, born in Ware was the daughter of William Hammond, from Hertford and Catherine from Bishop’s Stortford. In 1901 William was a publican at King’s Cross, Clay End, Walkern and they had a visitor Charles H. Davis, 8, from New Southgate. At this time Hilda was recorded as working at home, presumably in the public house! Previously William had been a Police Constable in Hatfield (1891); Hemel Hempstead (1881) and Watford (1871). Before that he had been an agricultural labourer like his father. He died in 1906 aged 64. In 1911 Catherine, aged, 58, was living off her own means in Sudbury.
