Harriett Sophie Foord, 47, from Bircholt, usually called Birchall, Kent, was the ward matron of House 1.  She was also a ward matron in 1901.  In 1891 she was governess to the children (four aged from 15 down to 4) of Henry J Osborn, 43, a solicitor and Frances M, 43, his wife in Haughton, four miles to the west of Stafford, Shropshire.

Ada Bradford, 21, was the ward maid.  She was from Wadesmill, and was the daughter of William, from Standon, 6 miles NNE of Ware, and Sarah from the village of Little Munden, 5½ miles N by W of Ware.  William was an agricultural worker in 1891 living in a cottage on Ware Road, Thundridge, but had become a horse keeper on a farm at Sacombe Pond where they were living in 1901.

The girls in the house are listed in the table below:

Note 1: The Channing girls were living in 1901 with their mother Constance Patty, 29, and their grandparents, Thomas Palmer, 57, farmer and cake merchant and Sarah Martha, 59, his wife on Hampton Lodge Farm at Budbrooke, 2½ miles west of Warwick town centre, along with two uncles and an aunt with two servants.  In 1911 Constance was still living on the farm and was described as an artist.  As I can find no evidence of a marriage in UK presumably Constance Patty was married in South Africa.

Note 2: By 1911 Mary Duffin was living in Crows Green Road, South Weald, Essex with her widowed mother, Jane Elizabeth Robinson, 68. Mary was now herself a widow and was a district trained nurse, certified midwife, CMB, working for the Essex County Nursing Association.

Note 3: Christina Faber was already a widow by 1901 and was a teacher in a private school in Sculcoates, Yorkshire.  By 1911 she was living off private means in New Barnet with her older daughter, Katherine Beatrice, 17, who was also a student.

Note 4: Nancy Gostling was the daughter of Jennie E. Gostling and granddaughter of Frederick Newbery, 70, a miller and farmer of Biggleswade and Jane Newbery, 67, with whom they were living in 1901.  Her father was William Gostling who married Jennie Elizabeth Newbery in 1894.  In 1911 Nancy’s brother, Vernon who was a year older and born in Johannesburg, The Transvaal, South Africa was at Christ’s Hospital Boys School in Horsham, Sussex.

Note 5: In 1911 John Guy Snoulton Rutter, aged 41, was a second class Clerk in the London Telephone Service, living in Catford, SE London with four of his children by Florence Esther, (nee Smith) who had died in 1904. Also living with them were his second wife Clara Rose, 31, to whom he’d been married for 5 years, and their two children.

Note 6:  Henry Smith, born in Lambeth, was a Solicitor’s Clerk in 1901 in Kingston Surrey but a book keeper in 1911  He was living at 17, Halden Road, Wandsworth with his wife, Lizzie, born in Marylebone, and three children, Eleanor Fanny, 18, a clerk; Clifford William, 14, a scholar; Irene Phyllis, 4.  William Barker, 72, Lizzie’s father, and Isabel Ann Elizabeth, 46, Lizzie’s sister who was a dressmaker were also living with them.

  • I have an old autograph book belonging to Doris Ottaway with many autographs in it and some lovely drawings. If she has family that read this i will happily pass it on.
