  • Hi, I am Rose Powell, now Hayles. I trained at Hertford County from July 1975 to August 1977. I grew up in London where I returned after having trained. I believed Maura Fegan was in the year ahead of me. We worked with a young Dr. called ‘Patel’.
Then we did not know each other’s first name so well and were known by our surnames, as that was the protocol at the time. In my group there was O’Malley, O’Linda Whyte, Florence Pisto, Pat Lambert, Shirley George, the Olassa sisters, Sally and Talintino among others.
Some of the names at the time was Tanega, Sherma Blaise, Audrey Jackson, Ruth Armstrong, Pascal. There was a nurse called Davis or Davies who drove a sport car. Her mother also worked at the hospital.
Our tutors, during that period were, Sis Champion and Sis Oestreicher.
Looking back they were good times. We experienced the 1976 drought, with one of many slogans “don’t waste water, share a bath”.

I too began my first training on Kings ward under sister Smith. She could be strict, but had a wicked sense of humour.
We had a consultant who was Mr Madigan among others. In OPD, there was nurse Zac. A shortened version of her surname. We had the POP technician. I can only remember the wards of Kings, Queens and Sebright for children. Mossy was a handyman in employment.
I currently work as a social worker.

  • I trained at Hertford County Hospital from April 1976-1978. I keep in touch with Maura Fegan who was a year ahead of me, who lives in Northern Ireland.
My group was very small & contained more mature Nurses .
There was only myself & another girl called Jackie who were 18 & 19 years of age.
