Mr King of Brickendon

Memories of Roses and an Austin 7

By Elizabeth Grimes

In the late 1940s my parents would visit Mr King of Brickendon near Hertford.  He had a lovely garden with masses of roses.  His  cottage and garden were a delight whenever we passed.

Many times he would walk us round his well tended garden and point out the hole in the hedge where he could look at his wife’s grave in the churchyard next door.

I remember one day he showed me his little garage with his Austin 7 inside. When the doors were opened it was boobytrapped with tins to fall down.
