  • I stayed in Mangrove House in 1981-1982 when at Hatfield Poly. My room was the bay window at front right of the picture- it was shared between 3 of us and was a massive room!

  • 1959-1961. Joan Ward and I shared a room at the back of the house for our second year as students. I remember a lovely staircase and entrance hall.

  • I was also a student at Balls Park 1956-58. I shared the room on left with Barbara Stroughair & Joyce Mills during our first year. Happy days.

  • So sorry Mangrove has been knocked down. Many happy memories of living there as a student of Balls Park Teacher Training College in 1965.

  • My family stayed in this hotel after returning from South Africa in 1954 when I was 8 years old.
The manager was Mr Tapscott ( The original Basil Fawlty)
I seem to remember walking across the grounds to Abel Smith school.

  • I stayed at the hotel February to June 1963 when I became the first Branch Manager of Eagle Star Insurance Co. Ltd. I remained there until February 1966 when I was moved to North London. I lived at Watton at Stone

  • Wow! This became a halls of residence for Hertfordshire university and was my home for the first year of my undergraduate degree. It looked much the same as the picture and brings back great memories.

Rumors were then that it was haunted…it may have been the spirits associated to student life that perpetuated those rumors 😉. Lol!

  • I stayed here when I was a boy aged 4 or 5 years old. I think the owner or maybe the manager was called Tapscott.

  • So pleased to come across this photo of Mangrove House. I never knew my mother in law Louise White but have tried over the years to find out more about her and her family who lived at Port Vale Hertford. She is shown on the 1911 Census at Mangrove House as a 19 year old domestic servant with Elizabeth Gilbertson as head of the household. I could never find out about the house so very pleased to find this information Thanks Irene Bulmer
