An Evening with John Carrington

A Bramfield farmer brought to life after 200 years

By Geoffrey Cordingley

John Carrington was a farmer who lived at Bacons Farm from 1726 – 1810.  He was also the local chief constable, overseer of the poor and a churchwarden at St Andrew’s Church, Bramfield.

John wrote a diary which has been used by the Society to create a number of evenings which have told part of the story of his life.

This photograph was taken on the first of these evenings held at Bramfield Church.

Keith Morby, seated, was John Carrington and Stuart Wright played his eldest son, Jack, who was landlord of “The Rose and Crown” at Tewin.

  • Have you written up information about John Carington. I have a relative, John Woolnough who farmed in Bramfield in exactly this period. I would be very interested to find out more about his life. Thank you in anticipation, Brian Woolnough.
