The Great Bed in Ware Museum

According to the experts at the V & A Museum, where the bed has been on dispay since it arrived there in 1931, The Great Bed was made around 1590.

It was probably made as a tourist attraction for one of the many inns in Ware at the time.  The bed is over 3 metres wide and as such is the biggest bed known to have been made.

Ware was on the Great North Road which pilgrims used on their way to the shrine at Walsingham in Norfolk and others used to reach Cambridge or more Northerly towns.

The Geat Bed arrived back in Ware on Tuesday, 27th March, 2012, see the article, The Great Bed Arrives!!, and went on display at the museum on Easter Saturday, 7th April.  It is on a year’s loan.
