The Hertford Theatre Gallery is showing a wonderfully diverse range of work in its current exhibition by Elysian Arts. Each of the four artist have been inspired by the title ‘From The Air’
As one of the artists taking part, I relished the opportunity to create a new body of work with a focus on the county of Hertfordshire and Hertford, my home town. Seeing this beautiful County from above, in the form of mapping.
I began a journey which enabled me to explore a selection of the historical maps held in the collection at HALS, Hertfordshire Archives and local studies.
I spent two very enjoyable days viewing and photographing the maps, some of which dated back to 1611.
What followed was a series of complex creative stages using the photography, computer, glass sheets, gold and metal foils and multiple firings in my kiln to produce the collection on sale in the exhibition.
I have hung 14 of the 22 pieces, using images that offered an aesthetic quality in terms of pattern and design, rather than place. The result is a unique view on the area surrounding Hertford.
